VERY IMPORTANT: Before you prepare a proposal to the Emerging Technologies, review the requirements that you must meet if your proposal is accepted.

Use these instructions to ensure that your submission is complete and that it meets all applicable program requirements: Emerging Technologies proposals must be submitted electronically via the SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 online submission system. No other method of submission will be accepted. Fax submissions are not accepted. Only the files and supporting material uploaded through the submission system will be considered for review.

Begin by starting a new submission in the SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 Online Submission Form choosing Emerging Technologies. When you begin the form, your submission will be assigned with a submission identification (ID) number that will be used to identify your submission throughout the review process. You can modify the form up until the deadline. If required information is missing, your form will be marked Incomplete. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted. The form is divided into five sections:

Submission Form

This is where you give a detailed text description of your demonstration. The fields are:

• Category/technology: How would you best categorize your piece or the technology it uses? Choose one existing keyword from the supplied list, or submit your own.
• Executive summary (50 words or less): A brief one- or two-sentence summary that you could use to concisely explain your project's innovation to the hundreds of people you will meet each day at SIGGRAPH Asia 2013.
• Give an overview of the goals of your project and its innovations, and how it will affect our lives in the future (maximum 300 words): a concise description of what your project is all about and why it is significant. This text should be a stand-alone description of the project, suitable for publication. It will be used for online publicity and the printed catalog.
• What are the core technical innovations of the work? Describe your project's technical innovations in significant depth. What have you developed? What are the critical pieces that you designed? Is it new technology or a creative use of existing technology?
• Place your work in context: How does this work expand on prior work? How is this approach different from what has been previously attempted? What are the advantages and disadvantages of your approach? Make sure to include references to previous work, including your own. Especially careful investigation and citation of previous Emerging Technologies works are indispensable.
• References: Provide a full list of relevant previously published works by yourself and others.
• Has this work appeared or been submitted elsewhere? Indicate whether this work has been presented, published, or submitted elsewhere. This includes work that is closely derivative of other work or techniques. If so, please give details to strengthen your proposal.
• How many people can participate at one time?
• How long is the experience?
• How long will you need for setup?
• How many people will it take in the booth to explain your demonstration?
• Project URL: If your project has a public web page which you would like to make available to the reviewers, include the URL here.

Submission and Authorization Agreement

All submitters must complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement before the submission deadline. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted.

You must review your permissions (part of your original online submission form) and complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement by entering an electronic signature before the submission deadline. You can already peruse and sign the agreement during the submission process. We strongly recommend this. If you do not complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement with an electronic signature, your work cannot be presented at SIGGRAPH Asia 2013.

Technical Requirements

On this page, you give detailed information about your needs for networking, electricity, set-up time, and other resources for a successful Emerging Technologies exhibit and describe your work including size, weight, as well as light and sound emission.

Here, you can upload files that complement your submission, including diagrams, images, and video. This includes:

Mandatory Files

• Extended abstract with 1 - 3 pages: Describe the background, related work, method, social impact and future vision of your work. Since the Emerging Technologies attendees will try your work at the venue, the description of evaluation part is optional.
• Please note: You should prepare your submissions according to the ACM SIGGRAPH formatting instructions. For more information about ACM publication requirements, please review the Instructions for Authors. Examples can be found here and here.
• Floor plan: Submit detailed layout of space needed for installation, including power requirements, exact dimensions of floor space and height, lighting, audio, power sources. Typical tables and chairs will be provided according to your request without additional fees. If you require special equipment or furniture, write the specifications.
• A logistics plan: This plan further describes requirements for your proposed demo. Important details must include unique staging and handling concerns, time required to set up, diagrams for space utilization (including any overhead requirements such as clearances or hanging suspensions), number of people required to set up and/or present, dependency on radio/wireless control elements, or any other aspects of your demo. If in doubt, no detail is too small to include here for conference planners. Remember: If your proposal is accepted, your demo must be presented for several days, so please make sure you include chairs for each presenter in your group in the space layout.
• One image for web: In JPG or PNG format, max. 200 KB for website publication.
• One image for print publication (300 dpi, 1,500 x 1,200): Images should typically be a minimum of 1,500 pixels wide and 1,200 pixels tall to be suitable for publication. If your native format is smaller than that (for example, video) submit the highest resolution image possible. At least 300 dpi at 4 inches tall x 5 inches wide. Pixel resolution of at least 1,500 x 1,200. No compression, Mac or PC platforms. Images MUST be submitted in digital format.
• A representative video, maximum five minutes: Maximum 200 MB. The best way to communicate an interactive installation is through video. Each submission should include a polished video that explains the significance or importance of your submission in a concise manner. Videos must be uploaded at 720p (1280x720), using either MPEG-4, AAC, or H.264 encoding and should not exceed 200 MB. Maximum duration is five minutes. Please take time to light and shoot your video as carefully as possible, because we will use it in the official Emerging Technologies Preview Video Trailer, which will encourage attendees to come see all of Emerging Technologies. We strongly encourage all Emerging Technologies submitters to provide a video with English narration and/or text that explains the main points of their submissions. Make sure to test your video on a variety of different operating systems and media players before submitting it! The video of accepted work will appear on the ACM digital library.

Non-native English speakers may use the English Review Service to help with text of submissions. Please note that this takes time, so your submission must be submitted to the English Review Service two weeks before the published deadline. Review Process

SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 Emerging Technologies is a peer-reviewed demonstration. All submissions to Emerging Technologies will be reviewed by the program committee and external reviewers, which is a team of industry, research, and academic professionals in the fields of graphics, computer-human interactions, display systems, computing, entertainment, design, systems engineering, interface devices, art, and related fields. Reviewing is single-blind, i.e., the names of the reviewers are hidden from the author. If your work is not accepted, that is not a reflection on its quality. Because of space limitations, we are able to accept only a limited number of pieces.

Notification

Submissions will be reviewed soon after the submission deadline. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent via email in August.

Detailed information and instructions as well as deadlines will be sent to submitters along with the acceptance letter.

At the Conference

The main form of presentation in Emerging Technologies is a live demonstration, which will be available throughout the conference. You are responsible for ensuring that your demonstration is manned during all opening hours of the Emerging Technologies area. This is hard work, and over several days there will be thousands of people passing through your demonstration. Therefore, before submitting, make sure that you will have the resources to send sufficient staff to SIGGRAPH Asia 2013. We recommend at minimum two people, but four or even more could be needed depending on the nature of your work. To facilitate this, SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 provides 'Session Only' passes that entitle to access the Emerging Technologies demonstration area.

You will have the opportunity to give a short presentation, where you can explain your work in greater detail than it is possible in a demo situation. Details on this presentation will be included in the acceptance notification.

Publication

All accepted work will be documented in the SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 website and on the Full Conference DVD-ROM, as well as on the ACM Digital Library.

Logistics

We will work closely with you to insure proper and effective installation of your work. In general, accepted researchers are responsible for bringing or shipping their work to SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 in Hong Kong. Contributors are also responsible for return shipping after the conference.

You are expected to bring sufficient personnel to staff the demo throughout the conference. SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 may be able to provide some student volunteer support.

If your work arrives at the conference center, and it is not as depicted in your submission or is not ready for demonstration, we reserve the right to exclude it from the Emerging Technologies exhibition.

Other Details

You will be able to update your basic submission information so that it can be included in the conference program and website. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance.

For attending SIGGRAPH Asia 2013, registration and travel costs are at your own expense, except for the contributor of record, who will receive recognition as specified in the SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 Recognition Policy.

Will SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 pay for shipping my work?

No. If your work is accepted, you are responsible for crating, shipping, and insurance.

Should I send video documentation of my piece?

Yes, if at all possible. Video documentation is highly recommended. Time-based documentation is the best way to illustrate how conference attendees will actually experience your project. We may also use the video in publicity for Emerging Technologies.

May I submit my unfinished work as a "work in progress" if it is not complete by the submission deadline?

A work in progress may be submitted if it represents a large portion of the final version. However just a video prototype is not enough but a functional prototype should be needed before the deadline. Please explain in detail what additions will be made prior to the installation on the extended abstract. You will need to convince the reviewers that your work will be ready for demonstration in time for the conference.

I'm having trouble uploading the high-resolution digital image required for online submission. What should I do?

If, due to bandwidth restrictions, you cannot upload a high-resolution image or supplemental movies, please instead upload a lower-resolution version. If we need to include a higher-resolution version for reviewers review or publication stills, we will contact you to make arrangements.

My email address will be changing soon. How can I notify you of the update?

You will be able to change your email address in the online submission system.

I've completed the online submission forms, but the system still allows me to edit my account. Am I done?

Yes. But you are allowed to edit your online submission account until the deadline: 13 June 2013, 23:59 UTC/GMT.

Can I submit a paper, brief, poster, or other work in addition to my Emerging Technologies proposal? Can I submit an Emerging Technologies proposal if the work has already been presented at a previous SIGGRAPH conference?

Yes. For instance, you could submit a demonstration based on a paper published at a previous SIGGRAPH conference. Be sure to list these related submissions in your proposal and make clear how your Emerging Technologies proposal expands on and is different from these.

If I don't need to ship my equipment, and I can carry it in with me, do I need to provide shipping documents?

If you want to carry your equipment into the convention center, please contact the Emerging Technologies Chair for detailed information on how to make appropriate arrangements.
