Interactive 3D Coloring with Mobile AR

Norwegian visual effects and digital design studio, Placebo Effects created a free mobile augmented reality interactive 3D coloring application that allowed users to play with the images in a narrative featuring two animated cows as part of an ongoing campaign by Norway's largest dairy producer, Tine.

This demonstration will allow the attendees to experience the interactive 3D coloring of the farm scene and cows on their own compatible iOS or Android device or using one of two iPads provided by the demonstrator.

The idea for the app was to create an interactive 3D coloration app in which the users could color their own three dimensional Tine farm while being entertained by the two cows. The farm scene contained in the order of sixty different elements that could be colored individually, including the two cows.

In the Tine Kuer AR app, storytelling is used to introduce the user to the magical world of AR where the cows act out a little story that gives the user a reason and incentive to color the scene, as well as to explain how the app should be used. Since the cows are speaking Norwegian, a subtitled video that explains this part of the AR experience will be running on a separate iPad on a small stand next to the milk cartons.

Using the animated 3D scene from the app we rendered fourteen images from the animation in a line art look to create a physical coloring book complete with the story of the two cows arriving at someone’s table and losing all their colors. The coloring book was made available online as a digital downloadable file. Examples of the printed coloring pages will be available.
